Congo People’s Republic stamps

P=have O=don’t have it

Congo is a name shared by two neighbouring countries in Central Africa, usually distinguished either by using their full official names or adding their capitals:

·         The Republic of the Congo is often known as "Congo-Brazzaville". It is the smaller of the two and lies to the west. It was once a French colony and part of French Equatorial Africa.

·         The Democratic Republic of the Congo is sometimes known as "Congo-Kinshasa" or simply DRC. It is the larger of the two and lies to the east. It was once the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium, when it was known as the Congo Free State, and later a Belgian colony when it was renamed the Belgian Congo. It was named Zaire from 1971 to 1997. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congo).

The Republic of the Congo, also known as Middle Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, and Congo is a former French colony of west-central Africa. Its borders are Gabon, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Gulf of Guinea. Upon independence in 1960, the former French region of Middle Congo became the Republic of the Congo. A quarter century of experimentation with Marxism was abandoned in 1990 and a democratically elected government installed in 1992. A brief civil war in 1997 restored former Marxist President Denis Sassou-Nguesso. The capital is Brazzaville.

Lou wrote: I have one correction on Scott IDs--Fr Congo #2, not #1. The red overprint/surcharge 5c on 1 c, #1--is a very rare stamp, only one sheet of 100 was printed, and found to be unsatisfactory, so the balance of the printing of 2900 stamps was changed to black--# 2.  It is more likely that the designer had the more common stamp as a source. The reproduced stamp is done in monotone so the overprint color cannot be determined, but I found a scan of #1, and changed it to a greyscale copy and the overprint/surcharge is very faint, not like that on the reproduction. I also found a scan of a used # 2, and altho the overprint/surcharge is still not as heavy as that on the reproduction, I think it is closer.  My third reason for the revision is that I can afford to buy a #2 and not the $6000+ # 1!
