The Independent State of Samoa is a country comprising a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean (about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand).

The Samoas are of volcanic origin and the total land area is 2934 sq km, consisting of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai'i which account for 96% of the total land area, and seven small islets: Manono, Apolima, Nuutele, Nuulua, Namua, Fanuatapu, Nuusafee and Nuulopa.

Previous names are German Samoa (1900 to 1914) and Western Samoa (1914 to 1997).

In 1962 Western Samoa declared independence, as a constitutional monarchy (Queen Elizabeth head of state) and a member of the Commonwealth.

THE SAMOA EXPRESS ISSUES - The first issue of stamps for Samoa were for a private post office operated by the local newspaper, The Samoa Times. This post office operated from 1877 to 1881, when the newspaper went out of business. Most of the stamps of this design readily available to the collector, including some of those shown here, are reprints that were made up years after the close of the post office they were created to serve. Differences do exist between the originals and the reprints. The stamps were printed in Sydney, N.S.W., by the firm of S.T. Leigh and Co. There are several shades of color for each issue, and they appear with several different perforations.
