Cape Verde is a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean (west of Senegal). It was uninhabited when first discovered by the Portuguese in 1456 or 1460. The first Portuguese settlers arrived in 1462. Cape Verde was colonized by the Portuguese in the 15^th century and administered with Portuguese Guinea until 1879. It became an overseas province of Portugal in 1951 and independent in July 5, 1975. Postage stamps have been issued since 1877.
