Flag of Seychelles

The Seychelles, a group of 92 islands in the Indian Ocean, were first charted by the Portuguese in 1505 (Arab traders may have visited them earlier). In 1742 the French took possession, and French settlement began during the 1770s. The islands officially passed into British hands by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. Under both the French and the British, the islands were regarded as a dependency of Mauritius; an island located about 1,800 km (1,100 mi) to the southwest. In 1903, Seychelles became a separate British crown colony. Pressure for independence began in the 1970s and led to the Seychelles' becoming an independent republic on June 29, 1976.

Centenary of First Seychelles Post Office

 Inside #195-7: Mauritius #18 (With "B64" cancelation)O

The Seychelles were a dependency of Mauritius until 1903/4 when they became a seperate colony. Between 1861 and 1890, when the first Seychelles stamps were issued, stamps of Mauritius were used. In the barred-oval cancellations, 'B53' was assigned to Mauritius, 'B64' to Seychelles.

Lou Guadagno sent the scan of Seychelles "B64" cx on Mauritius #18 (see above) and wrote:

The SoS on this set show a Mauritius stamp cancelled with a B64 hand stamp to commemorate the Centenary of the Opening of the First Post Office in the Seychelles.Technically, it is a Mauritius # 18, but the B64 hand cancel makes it a Seychelles stamp!

For many years, the stamps of Mauritius were supplied for mails from the Seychelles, and the B64 cancel was created to specifically show these mails originated in the Victoria post office on Mahe, the main Seychelles island.

You should change scans to the scan attached; the B64 is lightly stamped, but this is typical of most such applications, the post office was very frugal with its ink usage. It is a fairly rare stamp. I only saw one in my collecting career, and I lost it in a mail auction with a bid of $200.00.

Type II (#674): Smaller portrait. Size at top, 23mm. Character has 3 points.

Type III (#675): Portrait as in type I. Size at top,, 251/2mm. Character has 3 points.

Lou wrote: India #673 was issued in May, 1976, and then found to have an incorrect inscription in the last letter in the word before NEHRU. This was corrected in #674, the issue of September 1979. A third version in a different size, #675 was issued in November, 1979.

Seychelles #665 reproduces the India stamp with the corrected inscription and by the layout matches #674.
