200th Anniversary of Postal Service in the Kingdom of Sardinia
Inside
#3554: Sardinia Paper stamp
The
first real revolution of the postal system was not born in Victorian England
but in the small Savoyard Kingdom of Sardinia. Twenty-one years before the
"Penny Black", the first stamp in history dated 1840, a novelty was
launched by the Royal Post Office of Turin that will greatly simplify sending a
letter. Previously, writing remotely wasn't easy at all. The rules and
regulations imposed by state taxation favored smuggling and abuse. Until, in
January 1819 - exactly two hundred years ago - the intuition of a Turin state
executive did not change everything. The «Stamped Postal Card» is born. A
unique instrument in Europe that anticipates the celebrated English stamp by
two decades and that the popular vernacular first and the philatelic world
later baptized with the name of "Cavallini di Sardegna" (or simply
"Cavallini"). A revolution that Poste Italiane commemorates from
today with the issue of a special commemorative stamp for the bicentenary,
wanted by the Ministry of Economic Development. Thanks to a Turin official.
Poste Italiane celebrates the anniversary with a special stamp.
