Mutiny on the "Bounty"

Released on 28 April in conjunction with the Pitcairn Islands the Norfolk Island and Isle of Man Postal Administrations was a souvenir sheet which features one stamp illustrating Lt. Bligh and his party being cast adrift, another (being an Isle of Man stamp on a Pitcairn stamp) showing Fletcher Christian, and the third (a Norfolk Island stamp on a Pitcairn stamp) depicting "mutineers and Polynesian maidens".

The Isle of Man (NZ $2.40) and Norfolk Island (NZ $3.20) souvenir sheets, featuring the same three designs in a different order but in the same format, were also produced.

Lou wrote: A prestige booklet was issued by the Isle of Man (IOM) on May 3, 1990 for Stamp World 90 entitled "Isle of Man Penny Post"; two panes were special blocks of eighth of the regular issue and the third was a reissue of the regular block s/s.

The three panes were stapled into the booklet thru a rouletted margin that could be removed. Scott, as usual, did not number the booklet, but the contents were.

First day covers were produced for the three panes.

See scans for booklet cover, Sc #d panes and fdcs. The fdcs all have the added margina with staple holes and rouletting, but do not show clearly on the scans.

A very nice addition to a good looking issue.

A special FDC of the IOM Sc #424a block of four was produced with an added IOM 150th Anniversary of the Penny Black coin that was issued just for the occasion.

The cover has another cutout on the back showing the side of the coin with a Queen Elizabeth II image. With the internal support and coin, the cover is quite heavy, but it is a novel addition to a SoS collection.

Lou wrote: The two SoS are only available on a pane (#822a) in a prestige booklet containing two other non-SoS panes (no Sc # for booklet--I use Gibbons #SB50).

The pane is stitched into the booklet, but also has rouletting, so it can be removed with a clean left edge. The Scott's catalog mentions two types of the pane-- with stitching and without, but it is the same pane, and my pane scan shows both. 

Note on the SoS that both stamps are modified and shown without perforations.

Manxmen at Trafalgar

Isle of Man Post is proud to recognize the contribution made by Manx sailors at the Battle of Trafalgar in their miniature sheet set issued on the 1st February 2005. Perhaps the best known is Captain John Quilliam RN who was born in 1771 at Ballakelly in Marown. His claim to fame lies in having been First Lieutenant on board HMS Victory at the battle. Also present at Trafalgar were John Brown, John Lace, John Cowell, Charles Corlett, John Cowell and Thomas Curphy.

Isle of Man Post celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first Europa stamp with a two-stamp miniature sheet, featuring 2 stamp on stamps from previous CEPT Europa issues. Although the Europa series began in 1956 to publicise the unity of the six countries of the then European Coal and Steel Community – Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, France, Germany and Italy – the Isle of Man only took part for the first time in 1976 by which time the Europa theme had been taken over by the Conference of European Posts and Telecommunications (CEPT) of which the Island is a member. Themes have included ceramic art, landscapes, contemporary art, Europe in space, local dishes and historic personalities for which Isle of Man Post chose the literary career of T.E. Brown.

George V was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 1910 until his death in 1936. He was the first British monarch of the House of Windsor.

Although he occasionally toured the British Empire, George preferred to stay at home with his stamp collection and lived, what later biographers would consider, a dull life because of its conventionality. King George V and Queen Mary visited the Isle of Man in 1920.

Lou wrote: A really interesting set and s/s reproducing rare covers from the remote I.O.M. base that served as a pre-World War I military training camp and later as an internment camp for alien (German. Austrian. Turkish) civilians.  Many thousands were interned during the war years and the camp had it’s own post office to handle the volume of mail sent to family and friends in England and around the world, Since I also collect postal markings on stamps, I really like the special camp cancels and censor markings that are reproduced.

The £1.10 value reproduces a stamp created by an internee to be used on mail delivered inside the camp.  According to one source, most of the stamps were confiscated and destroyed by camp officials the first day they were used; a sheet of 21 is in a Manx museum and only one cover and nine stamps are in private collections.

Lou wrote: In addition to the perforated sheetlet shown on the sites (#1706a), an imperforate sheetlet was also produced for a special Mulready Packet offering that sold for over £30. It was offered online recently, removed from the packet. 

The #1704 Penny Black stamp was issued in a sheetlet of 20 v, perforated and imperf, with a decorative heading of a strip of Penny Blacks (check letters DI-DJ-DK-DL) on a partial Mulready stationery and an enlargement of a Penny Black. I wasn't aware of the imperf sheetlet; I found  it when "surfing" for something else, and bought the only one available. I now have all four sheetlets.
