Lou wrote: Here’s another from “The Smallest Stamps on Stamps” article
folder. I think it took me about 15 years to get this set, so I could confirm
the IDs— I know I didn’t have them for the 2000 SOSCU
master list. Before then, I had tentatively identified them from a French stamp
magazine illustration as “Self SOS” and, tho tiny, simplified and modified, that’s what they turned out to be—the basic design is
reproduced, the only modification is that the two inscription panels are white
instead of colored (see the detail scan).
Since I also collect
Postal Markings on Stamps, I took a close look at the tiny postmark too, and that’s where the design became interesting. For some
reason, the designer showed the

Lou wrote: This is one I've known about for a long time, but had no stamp or scan--
or idea on how to describe the issue!
There are 16 stamps with
se-tenant labels being offered for this issue, but the
Scott's catalogue only lists a single stamp # and only illustrates the stamp
without a label.
I questioned them about this and
I just got a reply from one of the Scott's catalog editors. Altho they weren't aware that 16 different pairs existed, their
position is that there is only one value stamp and that the labels do not
matter as far as listing. They also do not give a purpose of the issue, only
noting the design is Ferris Wheels on Film.
I have
not been able to find any information about this issue, but in examining the
stamp and the labels, I have come up with the following: firstly, the design is
not two Ferris Wheels but two different pictures of the London Eye observation
wheel taken during the Millennium New Year fireworks celebration, and secondly,
since the 16 labels illustrate historical people and events of the previous 100
years, I listed it as commemorating "The 20th Century".

The
Switzerland stamp – A mystery
In the beginning Lou wrote: "I had
contacted the Swiss philatelic bureau re the stamp with “Grock the
Clown”. Even tho it is plainly inscribed HELVETIA, I couldn’t
find it, and they just advised it is NOT a Swiss stamp. I thought it was
a stamp I had seen before, so when I didn’t find it in
Switzerland, I searched “Clowns” and “Circus” with no luck. Very strange."
I was sure that I saw that stamp before. I looked for it and found the
scan with no reference.
Lou wrote: "I never received a reply from
Switzerland. It is very possible that it was a stamp essay by a
designer/printer that was never adopted, or it was produced
by one of the printers to show their techniques. Grock the clown was
very popular in Europe and was a “natural” for a stamp subject. I have noticed
that the designer of these Guinea/Guinea Bissau/St Tome issues has added an
unusual item from time to time, which shows a wide knowledge and access to such
material".
This is still a mystery – if you have any information or ideas please
let us know….

Strangely, the designer has the name with an extra "s" 'Lomonossov', a spelling I hadn't found in any source I

Illustrated are various stamps and non
postal poster labels produced for the events. As discussed previously.
There
is some duplication of the SoS
on the two s/s, the stamps in the margins are black/white photos of SoS in the 1v s/s, and are shown there.

# B172 was the first stamp to show ice hockey, but it was not without
controversy. Many viewers thought the stamp was in
error for showing the goalie without a mask, but they were
not mandatory until many years later. The gaffe of the designer was not
showing the metal frames and netting of the goal. It appears to many that it is made of solid plexiglass!

and 1 v souvenir sheets, this time from Guinea, "issued" on
July 5, 2023. Again, some of the stamps chosen have appeared many times
before; and the lazy designer has the same stamps in the center margin of the
4v s/s and on the 1 v s/s. There are some first-timers
showing an endangered flower and a surcharged value. For some reason, the
designer chose to fill in the outer margins of the 4v s/s with black and
white reproductions of totally unrelated stamps issued over a wide time period. He probably did not know it, but he found a
fully perforated Sweden stamp that was only issued
in a booklet with one side imperf and an Austria
newspaper stamp with private perfs added.
I can't get excited by these issues,
but I believe they should still be included in the checklists and sites.
It was fun doing the IDs and finding the scans, but getting the Scott's #s
was not.
