Flag of Ecuador

Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is one of only two countries in South America, along with Chile, that do not have a border with Brazil. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometers west of the mainland.

Ecuador straddles the equator, from which it takes its name, and has an area of 283,561 km2. Its capital city is Quito, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 1970s for having the best preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America. The country's largest city is Guayaquil. The historic center of Cuenca, the third largest city in the country, was also declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, for being an outstanding example of a planned inland Spanish style colonial city in the Americas. Ecuador is also home, despite its size, to a great variety of species, many of them endemic, like those of the Galápagos Islands. This species diversity makes Ecuador one of the seventeen megadiverse countries in the world.

Ecuador became independent in 1830, after having been part of the Spanish colonial empire and the republic of Gran Colombia.

Martin wrote: Since it's only a blob, I was unable to identify the blue Ecuador (?) bisect, printed under OLIVIER BERTOSSA.

a google-search for this name also brought no result. Because of the color blue, it could be the MEDIO REAL from the first issue? But my MICHEL does not mention their existence - only known from both of the UN REAL stamps of 1865

I am curious, because THIS stamp alone would turn this sheet into a so-called "Martin-SoS" (I ignore the reproduction of foreign stamps). Has anyone any idea?

On the Ecuador 2005 issue, the stamp is definitely an orange color.

Lou Wrote: Reproduced are 3 rare Ecuador covers:  the first is one of only 2 to 5 existing 1883 covers with the first revalued stamp of Ecuador, needed due to shortage of 10c stamps in post offices.  The second is one of two 1895 covers with provisional revalue overprints needed due to shortages caused by the siege of the city of Guaranda during a revolution. Stamps with overprints reading upwards are listed in Michel, but this cover has inverted overprints, reading downward.  The last shows an 1896 imprinted envelope with a pair of 2 c stamps and a bisected stamp representing a 1 c value which was unavailable.  Such bisects were accepted by the post office due to shortages of low value stamps. Also on the cover are a pair of  another 1896 provisional revalue, changing 10c stamps to needed 5c values. The years 1896-1896 are printed over the indicium (as validation?).  The registered cover was sent to Constantinople, in the Ottoman Empire(Turkey), and was once in the famous Ferrari collection.  Catalog #s are on the scans.

Very unusual subjects for the designs, but for me, the reproductions are too small to really show them off. Still, this is one of the better SoS issues of 2017.
