Cook Islands stamps

Flag of Cook Islands

Named after Captain COOK, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand.

#4 Inside #197: Cook Islands #4O OR #8O

Lou wrote: The Checklist has #4 for Cook Islands #197, but I have #8.  Scott lists #s 1-4 on toned paper and #s 5-8 on white paper. Look at #195 with reproduction of #1—definitely meant to be an example of toned paper, although no toned stamps are so yellow, and then see #197—the stamp reproduced is certainly on a white ground and not toned, so it must be #8.
