Flag of Turks and Caicos Islands

The Turks and Caicos Islands is an overseas territory of the G.B. consisting of two groups of tropical islands in the Caribbean, southeast of the Bahamas. Although independence was agreed upon for 1982, the policy was reversed and the islands remain a British overseas territory.

The Turks and Caicos Islands have been under the control of many different governments: Bermuda (although never officially), Bahamas (1799-1848), Jamaica (as both a protectorate while an independent colony 1848-1873 and as a dependency 1873-1962) and now as a British Overseas Territory. All of these changes make for intriguing stamp and coin finds.

Sc #396 was issued on May 6, 1980 in a sheetlet of 5 stamps and a label.

The sheetlet was issued to commemorate the London 1980 exhibition by overprinting the margin.

(Thanks to Lou for the scan)

Note: #391-395 were also issued in sheetlets of 5 and a label with changed colors, perf 12.  These are completely different stamps that were issued much later, on December 20,1979, and the perfs are actually 12 x 12 (per Michel and my gauge).  Michel lists these with a letter change (C) from the earlier issue (A) for the different colors, perfs and issue date, then notes the plate size with a KB (Kleinbogen = small sheet) designation.

Each sheetlet is a SOS as there is a Penny Black reproduced in the margin; the 396 sheetlet has the same design.
