Queen Victoria (Chalon Head)

Chalon Head Inside #3253: Tasmania Chalon Head (B)

Prior to Federation and the release of Australia's first national stamp issue in 1913, the six former colonies issued their own stamps. This stamp issue is the first in a series of four commemorating that early philatelic history. This 5$ stamp reinterprets the original " Chalon Head" designs of Van Diemen's Land / Tasmania and Queensland (in circulation from 1855 to 1892 and 1860 to 1913 respectively). The portrait of Queen Victoria is based on Alfred Chalon's 1837 painting of the young queen in her coronation robes. Chalon's painting, now in Belgium's Royal Collection, is reproduced on the miniature sheet.

Tasmania was the 3rd colony in Australia to have issued postage stamps, subsequent to New South Wales and Victoria. The first issues known as the "Courier" for 1d and 4d values were issued on November 1, 1853. These stamps were engraved on the copper plates by C.W. Coard and printed by H. and C. Best, who was the publisher of the "Courier" newspaper. The printing plate contained 24 impressions of 1d or 4d stamp, which was arranged in 4 rows of six of each impression. The 1d stamp was the rate for town letters, and the 4d stamp was used for inland letters and overseas ship letters irrespective of destination. In accordance with this unusual postage being same for inland and overseas ship letters, the demand for 4d was much bigger than 1d. Subsequent to the issue of the "Courier" stamps, new stamps known as "Chalon Head" stamps were issued for 1d, 2d and 4d values in 1855, which were followed by 6d and 1 sh values in 1858. These 2 values of the "Chalon Head" stamps were used till end of 19th century.

90th Anniversary of the Salzburg Festival

#878 Inside #2257: Austria #878O

There is no doubt that the Salzburg Festival is one of the most important cultural events in Austria, its excellent reputation having had a decisive influence on the image of our country. On the occasion of the Festival’s 90th anniversary, a special commemorative stamp is being released showing the signet designed in 1928 by Poldi Wojtek and still in use today.

The birth of the Salzburg Festival was marked by Hugo von Hoffmannsthal’s famous drama “Everyman”, first performed on the Cathedral Square on August 22, 1920 under the direction of Max Reinhardt. Alongside Reinhardt and Hoffmannsthal, the creation of the Festival is due primarily to the composer Richard Strauss, the conductor and head of the Vienna Court Opera house Franz Schalk and the stage designer Alfred Roller. In the following year, 1921, alongside “Everyman”, the programme contained concerts for the first time, extended in 1922 by the addition of four Mozart operas. In 1926, the Felsenreitschule was first used as a second venue, having been converted under the architect Clemens Holzmeister. Since 1936, the Festival has had its own fanfare, composed by Joseph Messner, which is also used as the signature tune for radio broadcasts. The National Socialist era had serious consequences for the Salzburg Festival; “Everyman” had to be withdrawn from the programme and many performers were banned or fled into exile. With the beginning of the Second World War, the programme was substantially cut, and finally in 1944 was cancelled altogether as a result of an order by the propaganda minister Goebbels banning all festivals within the Third Reich. It was only in 1945, after the end of the war, that the Festival was launched again with a reduced programme. Hoffmannsthal’s “Everyman” was also back in the programme, and has since been a fixed element in the Festival.

In more recent times, the Festival has been dominated above all by two personalities: the conductor Herbert van Karajan and the Belgian artistic director Gérard Mortier. The Karajan age was characterised by the highest musical quality and the involvement of international stars, which led to a certain artistic stagnation towards the end of his era. It was then Mortier who opened up the Festival to new movements and gave more importance to theatre again. Mortier’s successor was Peter Ruzicka, who was followed in 2007 by the director Jürgen Flimm, while the office of President has for years been held by Helga Rabl-Stadler. From 2011, Sven-Eric Bechtolf will be the new head of theatre at the Salzburg Festival, taking over this function from the future artistic director Alexander Pereira. (www.post.at)

Day of the Stamp 2010

The traditional “Day of the Stamp” commemorative, with a surcharge of EUR 1.30 to support organised philately in Austria, is to be launched at the largest federation exhibition of the year, ÖVEBRIA, where it will be presented to the interested public. The stamp shows in the foreground a modern Austrian Railways Railjet train and the coat of arms of Gmunden, while in the background can be seen the charming town of Gmunden, the venue for ÖVEBRIA 2010, together with the romantic Lake Castle at Ort, Lake Traunsee and the magnificent mountain landscape that forms the setting for this delightful spot within the Salzkammergut.

Talking of Gmunden: This town with its population of 13,000 is located on the north shore of Lake Traunsee at an altitude of 425 m above sea level. The first settlement of what is today the town dates back to the 5th century. We do not know when Gmunden changed from being a fortified market to a town, but it is known that the site was heavily fortified in the Middle Ages. It was not until around 1300 that Gmunden acquired its own church, but there was already a regional court (now a district court) in 1217. Today this small town is a charming summer holiday resort, with tourism still a major source of income. The tableware produced under the name Gmundner Keramik also enjoys a reputation extending far beyond the borders of Austria as being “charming and typically Austrian”. The most important sights in the town are the Land Castle and the above-mentioned Lake Castle at Ort, dating from the 10th century and hence one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut.

The Railjet shown on the stamp, in contrast, is a high-speed intercity push-pull train operated by ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG and in commercial service since the start of the 2008/2009 timetable. It was first presented to the public on 15 September 2008. It is interesting that the Austrian Railways, unlike other railway systems, have chosen to use locomotive-hauled trains for high-speed operations instead of electrical multiple units. Like the former German “Metropolitan Express Train”, the Railjet trains are made up of individual coaches with airtight between-coach interconnections, but with normal screw couplings at the outer ends of the set of coaches.

So, the reproduction of Cuba #147 showing the infant King Alfonso XIII issued in 1890, has nothing to do with that anniversary. The cachet on the FDC reproduces a cover from 1855 (not April 24th) with Cuba #1, and the FD cancel reproduces only the Y¼ overprint used on the Havana local stamps also issued in 1855.

Lou wrote: In June of 1977 the territory of Afars and Issas became the Republic of Djibouti, and in addition to two stamps commemorating that event, stocks of stamps on hand were overprinted and surcharged with the new country name.  In addition to 20 stamps which were given the official imprints, smaller quantities of from 300 to 1000 of a value in different typefaces were provisionally produced on 15 stamps, possibly because of a misunderstanding of the instructions regarding the production of the overprints or because of an actual need due to a shortage of stamps.  These stamps were accepted in the mails and are very rare and expensive, both mint and on cover.

Although in 1948 air services between Tahiti and Metropolitan France were not yet fully established and the stock of stamps of the “Airplane” (Free France) series was not totally depleted, the Postal Service Authorities in the French Settlements of Oceania decided to issue three stamps intended for shipments via “Airmail”.

Engravers Gandon and Piel made these stamps by using the copperplate engraving technique, whose topics were in line with the major “Post” series. They depicted landscapes of Moorea and Maupiti, two islands of the Society archipelago.

On the occasion of the Salon d’Automne (Autumn Salon) in Paris, these little marvels, full of nostalgia, have today been reproduced on stamps on stamps with face values adapted to our times, by L. Dartois and re-engraved by A. Lavergne.
