Dagestan is an
autonomous republic of Russia on the Caspian
Sea.
The word
Daghestan or Daghistan means "country of mountains", it is derived
from the Turkic word dağ meaning mountain and Persian suffix and Stan
meaning "land of".
The republic is
situated in the North Caucasus Mountains. It is the southernmost part of
Russia.
